May 5, 1862: Battle of Puebla

The advance of the French forces commanded by General Charles Ferdinand Latrille, Count of Lorencez, in 1862, caused the mobilization of the Mexican troops. General Ignacio Zaragoza, who was the general in chief of the Eastern Army, decided to concentrate his defensive forces in the city of Puebla and confront the invading forces there. Mining Law Reform has been Passed

Reform and additions to the Mining Law—proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to nationalize lithium—were approved by the Chamber of Deputies. Now it will go to the Senate for discussion, where it is also expected to be endorsed shortly, since Morena’s political party and allies have the majority of the votes. The modifications to the law include important considerations to the environmental and social impacts generated by this industry. In addition, consent of the affected peoples will be required. Important groups of social and environmental activists are in favor of the approval of said reform.

Casa Esperanza Reopens its Doors in San Miguel

Casa Esperanza, which prioritizes social development and the quality of life of families, has reopened in San Miguel de Allende. It provides a home for the comprehensive development of priority care children from San Miguel. The reopening of the newly refurbished space is in the neighborhood of San Rafael. It is under the auspices of the Municipal System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF). It is a place where girls and boys in vulnerable situations have the opportunity for a decent education and can carry out activities that benefit them in their personal growth. More than 150 beneficiaries, including children and mothers, view the municipal DIF as their home.
