October 12: Día de la Raza (Columbus Day)
Year after year, October 12 brings up conversations about the history of the so-called discovery of America—a controversial topic about which agreement is difficult to achieve. While some say that “history is written by victors,” it also seems that every country, community, and individual write their own versions of history, and conclusions about 1492 continue to clash even after 500 years. In Spain, they celebrate Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day); in Latin America, they commemorate Día de la Raza (Day of the Race); and in the United States, they simply call it Columbus Day. Don’t miss this edition’s column of “La Coffee League.” How do you celebrate or commemorate October 12?
