Jacob Arriaga: Passing through San Miguel

Por Fernanda Noriega
Every day, hundreds of people arrive in San Miguel to see those places that have inspired painters, photographers, architects and other artists. For its part, the community of local people have learned to share their beloved town and to welcome the whole world with open arms. Chabela Vargas once said that Mexicans are born “where they want to,” and it is something that can be applied in this city. Many Sanmiguelenses were born in Madrid, California or London, some have had the fortune to know more of the world. Whether they come from nearby, from the state of Guanajuato or from a neighboring state, all of them consider themselves locals thanks to the charms of San Miguel has—they are Sanmiguelenses by choice.

Jacob Castillo Arriaga is a young communication scientist who travels constantly from Guanajuato, his hometown to San Miguel and vice versa. This is especially so during the times of traditions in the Heart of Mexico. He can be found on the streets when it is the feast of San Miguelito, or at Easter. A perfect day for him in San Miguel must have a dose of customs and traditions. Spending a day in his company involves walking the streets on foot and stopping at each store or establishment that catches his attention. He does not like to miss a thing and all the details are important to him. He likes to have lunch or breakfast, depending on the time, at the Ignacio Ramírez market, walk about the market in search of something interesting, nonessential, but that will remind him of the town when he returns to his city. He also loves to go out for a few drinks in the company of his partner or friends to any terrace bar he can find. His perfect day, luckily for him, happens whenever he visits San Miguel.
